THE HAGUE–Oranje Fonds has started the search for exceptional projects eligible for an Appeltje van Oranje (“Apple of Orange”) 2023. This year’s theme is “Neighbourhood Bridge Builders”.

Successful neighbourhood initiatives bridge differences and truly connect residents. Such initiatives have a chance of winning one of the three Appeltjes van Oranje which will be awarded for the 21st time.

Organisations can apply at website oranjefonds.nl/appeltjes for a chance to win the cash prize. The Appeltjes van Oranje will be presented by Queen Máxima in October 2023.

Together with social entrepreneurs, Oranje Fonds is committed to a society in which people care for each other, have equal opportunities and feel connected.

The fund considers connectedness crucial for an engaged society.

“Social relationships in neighbourhoods function as a safety net for all who may need it and provide an important basis for tackling and preventing problems such as loneliness, poverty and social divides. All manner of societal developments, such as poverty, an aging population, unemployment and austerity, affect the way people coexist. COVID-19 has exacerbated these issues but has also shown the importance of having close contacts,” Oranje Fonds said.

“Fortunately, there are many initiatives where local residents are working to bring people together and that know how to bridge differences. By bringing people of different walks of life together, social relationships are strengthened, mutual understanding is boosted and people feel more at home in their own neighbourhood. That’s why, in 2023, Oranje Fonds is putting neighbourhood bridge builders in the spotlight.”

Appeltje van Oranje is a yearly award presented by Oranje Fonds. It recognises and rewards three initiatives that are committed to an inclusive and engaged society. The winning initiatives have to be unique, creative and meaningful, and must have been active for at least two years.

To the winning organisations, the Appeltje van Oranje is first and foremost a token of appreciation for their work and efforts. At the same time, the award is also intended as an inspiration to others.

Each of the three winners will receive a bronze statuette made by Princess Beatrix and a cash prize of 25,000 euros, which can be freely applied towards the winning initiative’s objective.

The yearly awards are handed out by Queen Máxima and every five years by King Willem-Alexander.

Oranje Fonds provides support in the form of knowledge, networking, funds, time and recognition, and is made possible by assistance from the National Postal Code Lottery, the Dutch Lottery, friends and businesses. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are  Oranje Fonds patrons.
