Trinidad & Tobago turns 60: Commemorative stamps and coin, major activities planned

T will commemorate its 60th anniversary of independence with a series of yearlong events including national parades, cultural activities and caravans and the launch of a stamp and coin.

The plans for the milestone celebration were presented to the Ministerial Oversight Committee on Tuesday, as the Government moves to mark the country’s Diamond Jubilee.

A Working Committee comprising representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister and other ministries, presented an outline for a wide ranging series of local and national events spanning an entire year.

The National Celebrations will include, but are not limited to:

A. National Parades (Port of Spain & Scarborough)

B. Diplomatic events

C. Nationwide cultural activities, competitions and caravans

D. Youth based activities

E. School based competitions and activities

F. Community based activities, events, competitions

G. Awards, dinners and ceremonies

H. Television, radio and newspaper features and

I. Nationwide exhibitions

The launch of a National Logo, 60th Anniversary Commemorative Stamps and Coin, national parades and gala concerts is also in the cards.

Sporting and cultural events designed to showcase the multicultural, multi-ethnic, and truly cosmopolitan nature of Trinidad and Tobago have also been planned.

The activities are expected to be spread across Trinidad and Tobago.

Head of the Ministerial Committee Camille Robinson-Regis said a calendar of events will be shared with the public in the coming weeks.

She noted that T&T has achieved much in its 60 years of existence.

Robinson-Regis said: “While 60 years is still relatively young for any country, Trinidad and Tobago has achieved more than most in those 60 years, and this will be reflected in these events.”
