The 25-year-old ran a season best 43.85 to upgrade from bronze at Rio 2016. It was good enough to beat Colombia’s Anthony Jose Zambrano and London 2012 champion Kirani James. Gardiner looked comfortable in the closing stages while his opponents tired.
