The Open Skies Agreement between the Dominican Republic and the United States is transforming the country’s aviation landscape by increasing competition and driving down airfares, according to Igor Rodríguez, Director of the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC).
By reducing regulatory barriers, the agreement allows airlines greater freedom to operate international routes. This has led to a rise in available flights, lower ticket prices, and a surge in tourism. Rodríguez highlighted that while Dominican airline Arajet has been at the forefront—operating routes to destinations like New Jersey and Miami—the country’s appeal is drawing more international carriers, especially as efforts to attract tourists from non-traditional markets grow.
Arajet’s rapid growth, marked by the addition of its 11th aircraft, “Loma Quita Espuela,” and a 12th plane expected in November, illustrates how open skies have fueled expansion and spurred competition—ultimately benefiting passengers with more options and lower fares.
