Must read

Thirty-four schools across Jamaica will compete in the sixth staging of the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Jamaica National Robotics Championship, this weekend.

The two-day championship will be held on March 7 and 8 at Jamaica College in St. Andrew.

The top-three teams will get the opportunity to participate in the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas.

Acting Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Winnie Berry, endorsed the competition, noting that it aligns with the Ministry’s Transforming Education for National Development (TREND) initiative.

“A big part of that transformation is ensuring that every student in Jamaica has access to world-class opportunities in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,” Mrs. Berry said.

Deputy Chief Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Winnie Berry, delivers remarks during Monday’s (March 3) FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Jamaica National Robotics Championship media launch held at AC Hotel by Marriott in New Kingston.

She delivered remarks on behalf of Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kasan Troupe, during Monday’s (March 3) media launch held at AC Hotel by Marriott in New Kingston.

Mrs. Berry pointed out that the participating students represent the future of Jamaica’s innovation and industry.

“All of you young people are brilliant young innovators engaged in designing, coding and competing. You’re gaining invaluable experiences that will propel you into careers of today and future careers,” she said.

She expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their investment in Jamaica’s students and charged the participants to enjoy the challenge.

“Learn as much as you can and, most importantly, have fun as you learn. Whether you win or you lose, the real victory is in the skills you gain and the friendships you make along the way,” Mrs. Berry said.

The National Commercial Bank (NCB) Foundation has been the championship’s title sponsor since inception in 2019.

Director, Sharon Williams, shared that approximately $38.5 million has been invested to date, igniting creativity and innovation among more than 3,000 students across Jamaica.

“Technology is rapidly evolving, and Jamaica must keep pace. Your skills, creativity and passion will help our nation compete on the global stage. This is why the NCB Foundation remains committed to supporting young innovators like you,” she said.

Ms. Williams encouraged the participating students to embrace the journey.

“It’s not just about winning; it’s about learning. It’s not just about building robots; it’s about building the future. It’s not just about today; it’s about unlocking your potential for tomorrow,” she said.

The championship also is sponsored by Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Foundation, ATL Unbeatable, First Class Entertainment, ATL Automotive, Barita Foundation, Grace Kennedy General Insurance and Pure Water.
