Caribbean Community (Caricom) foreign ministers reaffirmed their dedication to Haiti’s stability during the annual Caricom summit in Barbados. Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Foreign Minister Denzil Douglas emphasized the urgency of addressing Haiti’s crisis through international collaboration and democratic reforms. He highlighted the need for elections and noted that African nations have already deployed troops to help restore order. Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne echoed this sentiment, stressing that a stable government is essential for Haiti’s recovery. Meanwhile, Montserrat’s Prime Minister Reuben Meade underscored the importance of dismantling gangs and revitalizing the economy.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced plans to propose that the UN assume greater responsibility for the multinational force supporting Haiti, covering structural and logistical costs. Barbados’ Prime Minister and current Caricom president, Mia Mottley, confirmed that elections are scheduled for November 15 but warned that conditions are deteriorating.
Caricom, comprising 15 member states, continues to advocate for international support and coordinated efforts to restore peace in Haiti. Leaders remain hopeful that upcoming elections and global intervention will pave the way for long-term stability.
