Dominican Republic elected Vice President of ISA Assembly

Must read

The Dominican Republic, represented by Ambassador Edward Aníbal Pérez Reyes, has been elected Vice President of the General Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). This marks the second time in three years that Pérez Reyes has achieved this role, underscoring his dedication to multilateral governance and highlighting the international recognition of the Dominican Republic’s contributions to marine resource management.

Ambassador Pérez Reyes has consistently emphasized the need to prioritize long-term environmental protection over short-term economic gains. He has called for a precautionary pause in seabed mining activities to allow for comprehensive scientific research and a thorough understanding of environmental impacts.

“The Dominican Republic’s position is clear: we support a regulatory framework that harmonizes economic growth with environmental preservation, fostering global collaboration and responsibility,” Pérez Reyes stated.

He has cautioned against rushing the exploitation of marine resources, stressing the importance of a science-based and sustainable approach to ensure that future generations benefit from these resources. “Prioritizing conservation and responsible management not only protects marine biodiversity but also ensures long-term sustainable development for our countries and peoples,” he added.

The ISA is tasked with regulating mineral resource extraction on the international seabed, beyond national jurisdictions, with the goal of promoting responsible exploitation and preserving the marine environment.
