Come next year, the Government will be rolling out digital service providers at post offices islandwide, assuring Jamaicans of inclusion in the ongoing digital transformation.
Making the announcement, Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Skills and Digital Transformation, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, informed that the service points will be “dedicated areas for people to go and receive help to access digital services free of cost”.
Speaking today (November 29) at the second annual Government of Jamaica (GOJ) Technology Showcase at the AC Hotel in New Kingston, the Minister pointed out that, currently, there are many GOJ services that are online, in tandem with the digital transformation.
She reasoned, however, that “there are many people who do not have internet access, there are many people who are afraid of going online or using those digital tools and so, what we are going to be doing is having our service points through Jamaica Post, which will be very nicely redone – there are several that have gone to tender – and in those points, many government entities can have their services administered”.
The Minister said that kiosks will be set up and young people who are trained by HEART/NSTA Trust will be available to render assistance.
“So, if you have an elderly grandparent who wants to get her passport online and she is worried about having to go to PICA (Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency) to stand in line for hours because she doesn’t know how to do it online, what will happen is she can go to her nearest post office,” the Minister explained.
In the meantime, Dr. Morris Dixon continues to urge Jamaicans not to fear the digital transformation.
“This Administration will leave no one behind but also more importantly, this Administration will not force anything on our people. This Administration will take the time and explain itself, will give you the tools and options to participate in digital Jamaica, will do everything that is reasonable and just to help you on the digital journey,” she said.
“We’re making sure that we put things digitally, so it’s easy [to] access, but for those who are a bit apprehensive or need support, we will provide that support. This transformation is not just for one; it is for all,” the Minister added.
