Dominican Republic reaffirms support for Guatemala’s democracy and urges OAS action

Must read

The Dominican Government reaffirmed its solidarity with the Guatemalan people and its full support for President Bernardo Arévalo, recognized as the legitimate winner of the August 2023 elections, which international observers deemed free and transparent.

Speaking virtually before the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez condemned recent attempts to nullify Guatemala’s presidential and vice-presidential mandates through questionable legal maneuvers. He stressed that such actions violate the sovereignty of the Guatemalan people and the democratic principles enshrined in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

Álvarez emphasized President Luis Abinader’s position that no branch of government can override the will of the electorate, reaffirming that the Dominican Republic would not recognize any de facto government resulting from a breach of constitutional order. He urged the OAS and the international community to actively defend democratic institutions in Guatemala and throughout the region, using all available mechanisms within the OAS and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
