The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed its appreciation for Canada’s recent announcement of $24.1 million in funding aimed at promoting social action, empowering women, and advancing human rights and security across the Caribbean region, including in Haiti.
The announcement was made by Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, who highlighted the importance of this funding in supporting regional priorities.
This new allocation follows Hussen’s earlier announcement of $38 million in funding for several initiatives discussed at the 48th Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government in February in Barbados. Among the initiatives receiving support are biodiversity governance, gender equality, hurricane recovery efforts (specifically following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl in 2024), and reproductive education.
CARICOM has expressed deep appreciation for Canada’s ongoing commitment to fostering a strong, strategic relationship based on shared values of democracy, human rights, and adherence to the rules-based international order.
The partnership also aims to address key regional issues such as trade, security, and climate change.
In response to the announcement, CARICOM reaffirmed its commitment to a long-term, vibrant partnership with the Government of Canada, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to advance mutual foreign policy, development, and security priorities.
