Dominican Republic | Abinader inaugurates Judicial City in Santo Domingo to modernize justice system

Must read

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) officially handed over the newly constructed Judicial City of Santo Domingo Este to the Judiciary, Public Prosecutor’s Office, and Public Defense. The event, led by President Luis Abinader, marked a major step toward modernizing the country’s judicial system. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Henry Molina, emphasized that the facility symbolizes a shift toward a justice system centered on efficiency, transparency, and human dignity. He noted that it would put an end to overcrowded holding cells and improve conditions for detainees, judicial personnel, and the public.

The Judicial City is set to begin operations gradually in the second half of 2025. The Judiciary is currently conducting tenders for equipping the facility with furniture, technology, and other essential services, in compliance with national procurement laws. The complex will serve as a model for future judicial facilities across the country, improving access to justice for 2.9 million people.

Built on a 15,346-square-meter lot, the five-story building includes an underground parking facility and modern architectural features with sustainable design elements. The facility will house 22 courtrooms for criminal, civil, and labor cases, as well as a Justice of the Peace Court, mediation and interview centers, and offices for 109 judges. Its design integrates advanced technology and a central atrium separating the Judiciary, Public Defense, and Public Prosecutor’s Office, making it the first of its kind in the Dominican Republic and a regional benchmark for judicial infrastructure.
