Jamaica secured investments amounting to approximately $16.5 billion through bilateral engagements with partner countries in 2024.
This was announced in the Throne Speech, delivered by Custos of Kingston, Hon. Steadman Fuller, at the 2025/2026 Ceremonial Opening of Parliament at Gordon House on Thursday (February 13). He was deputising for Governor General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen.
Custos Fuller noted that Jamaica continues to strengthen its global presence, forging strategic partnerships that drive inclusive economic growth and improve quality of life for citizens.
He said through international cooperation, the country secured critical investments in climate resilience, digital technology, energy and food security, health, education and disaster management.
“In 2024, bilateral engagements yielded $47 million for capacity-building, $60 million for citizen security, $230 million for security operations and equipment and $7.6 million for sports equipment for schools. Agreements were also secured for a research vessel valued at $1.2 billion and sporting infrastructure development valued at J$15 billion,” he said.
He noted that support from Jamaica’s diaspora remains strong.
Jamaicans living abroad played a key role in the mobilisation of aid following Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Rafael. Custos Fuller said the country mobilised more than $525 million to aid recovery efforts following the weather events. He expressed gratitude to those who contributed, stating that “Jamaica continues to thank international partners and the diaspora for their global solidarity in disaster response.”
Meanwhile, Custos Fuller said Jamaica continues to champion its interests globally, strengthening its role within international organisations.
He noted: “This year, Jamaica will be seeking re-election to the International Maritime Organization Council. In July 2025, Jamaica will also assume the Chairmanship of CARICOM’s Conference of Heads of Government, leading initiatives in peace and security, digital innovation, food security, and health, while advancing the Caribbean Single Market and Economy.”
The Throne Speech was presented under the theme ‘Jamaica’s Next Chapter: Aspiring to Greatness’.
