Winair Reconnecting Barbados With French West Indies

Barbados welcomed further regional connectivity as Windward Islands Airways International (Winair) N.V., launched its service to the island last weekend.

Winair’s inaugural flight, WM 823 from Sint Maarten, via Fort-de-France landed at the Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA) on Saturday, November 16, at 9:00 p.m. This service presents a much-needed solution to recent travel disruptions, reinstating vital air access between Barbados and the French West Indies.

The new flight from Sint Maarten, with a stopover in Martinique, marks a strategic move to bridge travel gaps created by the absence of Air Antilles from the Barbados market.

Winair will operate three flights per week between Sint Maarten and Barbados, with connections from Barbados to Martinique and Dominica. Winair now offers passengers more travel options and connectivity within the Caribbean region to Tortola, Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Barts, Saba, and St. Eustatius and further abroad, through Sint Maarten, to Europe and North America.

Chief Executive Officer of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), Andrea Franklin, expressed her enthusiasm for the new service, stating: “The introduction of Winair’s service marks a pivotal milestone in re-establishing vital connections with our neighbours in the French West Indies.

“We are delighted to welcome Winair, whose operations will enhance our airlift capacity in the region, and increase opportunities for leisure and business travel, while strengthening ties with the French Caribbean.”

Enhanced Connectivity for the Caribbean and Beyond

The timing of Winair’s expansion aligns well with the peak travel season, enhancing access for both Caribbean residents and international travellers.

This robust network positions Barbados as a gateway for visitors from major source markets who will now have more options to explore the island’s vibrant culture, pristine beaches, and exciting attractions.

Winair’s Chief Executive Officer, Hans van de Velde, noted: “We are incredibly proud to launch this new connection for Barbados and provide our passengers with enhanced travel opportunities, whether you’re a local resident or an international traveller.

“Winair offers a seamless and convenient journey. Our partnerships with global airlines like British Airways, Air France, United, and JetBlue further extend our reach to Europe and North America. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team.”

Mr. Van de Velde further noted that Winair is a trusted and reliable airline in the Caribbean region, with a 63-year long history of providing a smooth and enjoyable travel experience.

With a growing fleet of three ATR42-500 and five Twin Otters, Winair is anticipating a positive upcoming winter season, and remains committed to continuously improving, innovating, and growing its services.
