The small island of Barbuda, home to fewer than 2,000 residents, has received a significant upgrade with the opening of its new international airport.
The airport was officially inaugurated today, attended by various officials and local residents and persons who journeyed over from the sister island of Antigua,to celebrate this important milestone.
Tourism Minister Charles Ferendez described the event as a “commitment to the future of Barbuda,” emphasizing its role in fostering unity between the two islands, which have had their differences.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne highlighted the potential for job creation, tourism growth, and economic development.
He said a $75 million loan has been secured to expand the airport, which features a 1,248-square-foot terminal and a runway of approximately 6,000 feet.
Browne expressed his vision for Barbuda, aiming to enhance its potential as “one of the most prosperous and flourishing island communities in the Caribbean.”
The airport will be named Burton-Nibbs International Airport.
