Record-breaking passenger numbers for Dominican airlines in July

Must read

In July, Dominican Republic-based airlines achieved a new record in passenger traffic to and from the Caribbean nation, totaling 114,888 passengers. This figure surpasses the 96,000 passengers recorded in June 2024, marking a significant milestone for the country’s aviation sector.

According to information obtained by Infotur Dominicano from the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), based on data provided by the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Arajet emerged as the leading Dominican airline, accounting for 79% of total passenger traffic. Arajet recorded its highest number of passengers transported in a single month since it began operations, with a total of 90,433 passengers, up from 76,000 in June 2024.

Sky High Dominicana secured its position as the second most active local airline, despite operating with smaller aircraft compared to Arajet. Sky High experienced its second busiest month of 2024, transporting 17,658 passengers, primarily to Miami and Pointe-à-Pitre.

The JAC noted that while Dominican airlines have consistently set passenger traffic records, they have been significantly impacted by the suspension of flights to Haiti and are expected to face further challenges due to the closure of Venezuelan air borders.

From January to July 2024, Arajet transported a total of 489,585 passengers, followed by Sky High with 92,323 passengers. Sky High’s operations have been affected by the suspension of flights to Maiquetía (Caracas), Venezuela, one of its main destinations along with Miami, Florida. Air Century ranked third with 31,517 passengers, also impacted by the suspension of flights to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Infotur Dominicano reported.

Other Dominican airlines such as RED Air, Helidosa, and Sunrise Dominicana reported 3,178, 2,398, and 405 passengers, respectively, all of which have also been affected by the suspension of flights to the Haitian capital.
