More than 300 St. James students have received financial aid and back-to-school supplies from the New Fortress Energy (NFE) company, in partnership with the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI).
The primary and secondary-level students were awarded at the eighth annual staging of the company’s back-to-school treat, held at Pier One in Montego Bay, on Wednesday (July 31).
In response to the initiative, Education Officer, Ministry of Education & Youth, Yvonne Hardie, said the Ministry was appreciative of the gesture.
“The Ministry of Education and Youth endorses this kind of partnership, as we are cognisant of the fact that we will never be able to provide all the resources that our schools and our students need,” she said.
“New Fortress Energy has remained committed to partnering with schools and stakeholders in communities, and as a Ministry, we are grateful and proud of their efforts and contributions,” Ms. Hardie added.
For her part, Vice President, NFE, Verona Carter, said that part of the company’s corporate mission is to support the underserved.
“Part of being involved in a country like Jamaica… is to understand that there are underserved, wonderful people that also need an opportunity to thrive and flourish. So, our corporate mission should be to see where the vulnerable areas are and how we can serve and uplift,” she said.
As an additional benefit of the initiative, top PEP performers will receive a $35,000 bursary to aid with matriculation to the secondary level.
“We are doing $10,000 each for 300 students, $50,000 bursary for high-school students, and $35,000 again in bursary for 30 students who are top performers in the recent PEP examinations. So, that’s an additional layer of giving that we have offered this year,” she explained.
The treat also provided free medical, dental check-ups, fun rides and snacks for the students.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Dwight Vernon, expressed gratitude to the New Fortress Energy company.
“On behalf of the Municipality, our Mayor and everyone, we give you our love and our appreciation for this wonderful gesture,” he said.
