Antigua | Government discusses move into digital taxi services

Must read

Antigua and Barbuda is taking steps to modernize its transportation sector by developing a local ride-hailing application, aiming to enhance safety and convenience for both residents and visitors.

This initiative was discussed in a recent Cabinet meeting with a Taxi Association leader and an entrepreneur.

Information Minister Melford Nicholas, during a post-Cabinet press briefing, explained the security benefits of the proposed system.

“The president or the leader of the Taxi Association made the case that in a number of instances, particularly for single female patrons of the taxi business, they have some security issues,” Nicholas stated.

He added, “The platform that they could be procured virtually… they will be able to do some tracking as you normally would.”

The proposed service, potentially named ‘Swyft’, would differ from international ride-hailing apps by exclusively employing licensed taxi drivers and vehicles. It would feature virtual booking, electronic payments, and real-time tracking.

The Cabinet stated that the new service aims to supplement, not replace, existing taxi incomes.

“The taxi-drivers will receive the full amount of the costed service; the company will exact a small surcharge which it will add to the pre-determined price.”

At least one taxi association has expressed support for the initiative. Nicholas elaborated on the next steps: “I think the cabinet gave its blessings and its consent for them to continue to consult with the taxi fraternity and provided all are in line and out of the same idea, then there should be no reason why this platform should not become commonplace in the society.”

Preparatory measures are already underway, including the compilation of a driver and vehicle database. The company behind the proposal has been registered as a limited liability company with the Intellectual Property Office.
