Must read

Three Dominican software engineering students, aged 20, 21, and 22, have advanced to the final phase of the 2024 Huawei ICT Competition. This global event evaluates the skills, knowledge, and caliber of future talent in the IT industry on an international scale.

Having successfully navigated the national and regional stages, these students from the Santo Domingo Technological Institute (Intec), along with their instructor, are set to travel to Shenzhen from May 23 to 26 for the contest’s eighth edition. In Shenzhen, they will demonstrate their expertise in the Cloud category, undergoing rigorous testing of their knowledge and skills.

Carolina Herrera, Director of Public Relations and Communications for Huawei Central America and the Caribbean, highlighted the immersive experience awaiting the students during their stay in China. Alongside educational and cultural activities, they will have the chance to interact with delegations from around the world and visit Huawei’s headquarters, where the company develops and produces its solutions.

The Dominican team will join 146 other teams from regions including Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America, vying for the prestigious title in this highly competitive technological arena.

The competition is open to students from Huawei’s ICT academies and higher education institutions globally, promoting comprehensive training based on the pillars of education: learning, doing, living together, and being.

Students registered individually through an online form on Huawei’s website, selecting their desired category, undergoing evaluation, and then forming groups supported by a tutor to represent their institution.

Teams from the Dominican Republic, including students from the Ibero-American University (Unibe), the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (Pucmm), and the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (Intec), initially competed against counterparts from Panama, Guatemala, Martinique, and El Salvador across divisions such as Network, Cloud, and Computing.

Subsequently, they advanced to the regional level, where Dominican representatives, alongside teams from Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia, emerged victorious in the Cloud category, securing their spot in the global competition held in China.

Since its inception in 2015, the Huawei ICT Competition has attracted over 150,000 students from 90 countries and 2,000 educational institutions worldwide.
