Jamaica Committed to Strengthening Friendship with Dominican Republic

Must read

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, has affirmed the Government’s dedication to enhancing the bonds of friendship with the Dominican Republic.

He said the countries enjoy a long-standing partnership that has deepened, reflecting a shared determination and strategic vision for the attainment of national and regional goals.

“This includes greater collaboration in areas of mutual interest such as trade and investment, tourism, air services, security, among others, which are resulting in tangible outcomes within the framework of new bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs)”, he noted.

“As close neighbours and friends, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic also remain committed to supporting each other in difficult and unprecedented times,” he added, while extending commendations to Ambassador, Her Excellency Angie Martínez Tejera and her team for the significant contribution to the strong and amicable relations between the nations.

The Foreign Affairs State Minister was addressing the National Day celebration to mark the 180th anniversary of Independence of the Dominican Republic held on Friday (March 1) at the Ambassador’s residence in Kingston.

He congratulated the Spanish-speaking country on its remarkable progress towards national development in recent years.

He noted the country’s outstanding economic performance as well as its unwavering commitment to sustainable development.

“The Government’s swift and decisive response in times of challenges has not only bolstered economic growth but has also paved the way for a brighter future for its citizens,” Mr. Terrelonge said.

In recent years, the Dominican Republic has made impressive strides in developing its nation.

Its economy, which includes farming, tourism, and manufacturing, has shown strength despite global economic challenges.

In 2024, the Dominican Republic is expected to see the highest growth in Central America, reaching a notable 5.2 per cent.

This positions the economy as one of the fastest-growing in the region and highlights the country’s impressive recovery from the setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic.
