Dominican Republic establishes commission to assess infrastructure

Must read

Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader has created a Public Infrastructure Supervision Commission to identify vulnerable pieces of infrastructure that are at risk of deterioration due to extreme weather caused by climate change.

Abinader created the commission by Decree 603-23 on Friday and the members will report directly to him.

Geologist/engineer Osiris de León will chair the commission. Executive direction will be exercised by the director of the National Office for Seismic Assessment and Vulnerability of Infrastructure and Buildings (Onesvie).

The commission is expected to submit bimonthly reports to the president where they will recommend corrective measures to affected infrastructure.

The commission will inspect all overpasses, tunnels, elevated roads, bridges, pedestrian bridges, slopes in critical conditions and public buildings.

The commission’s creation follows last Saturday’s tunnel collapse in Santo Domingo after heavy rains and floods.
