inister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall, has set Monday, June 12, 2023, as the date for Guyana’s Local Government Election (LGE).
Dharamlall wrote Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) chairwoman Justice Claudette Singh yesterday to inform her of the date for the LGE.
The last LGE was held in 2018.
Dharamlall announced last year that the LGE would have been held on March 13 but the date was pushed back after there were disputes over the demarcation of constituencies and the voters’ list.
Meanwhile, GECOM announced that it has reopened the process for political parties and independent candidates, whose symbols were not approved during the last registration exercise, to apply for their insignia to be recognised.
GECOM has set 1 March 2023 as the date by which a printed and electronic version of the symbol must be submitted.
Political parties and independent candidates must submit their approved symbol and list of candidates on Nomination Day.
