ORANJESTAD – To improve service to the public and entrepreneurs, the government will simplify applying for permits.
Simplifying permit decisions and putting in place a virtual desk for all permit applications contributes to improved customer service to entrepreneurs and the business and investment climate in Aruba.
The legislation regarding permits is outdated. The purpose of the economic policy of the establishment ordinance is not clear, and some part of it dates back to 1945 and is primarily based on the Curaçao situation at that time. In project 1 “Accelerate and improve permit decisions” the establishment permit, catering permit, land issue permit, construction permit, residence permit, and work permit will be reviewed and stripped of unnecessary parts. The policy purpose of each of the permits will be reformulated and brought in line with current economic conditions. It may result in legislative changes. The criteria for evaluation of applications will be more explicit, and decision-making times will speed up.
Minister Geoffrey Wever: “The government needs to create the conditions to facilitate entrepreneurs to trade and innovate”. After finalizing project 1, project 2 “A coherent permit system behind one counter (one-stop-shop)” will start where entrepreneurs can apply for and obtain their permits behind one virtual counter with clear deadlines for handling the permit requests. The back offices of the various departments that issue permits will be coordinated and integrated as far as possible. A new legal framework and solid structure for a new economy where entrepreneurs can have the confidence and certainty of concrete and transparent procedures.”
