The Government has earmarked $2.2 billion to improve cybersecurity initiatives and purchase telecommunications equipment for the security forces.
Details of the provision are outlined in the 2022/23 Estimates of Expenditure, tabled by Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke, in the House of Representatives, recently.
The project seeks to facilitate the security force’s enhanced use of technology to ensure national security.
For the 2022/23 fiscal year, the money will be used to procure cameras and other hardware and software to support Jamaica Eye, which leverages the network of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the island to detect and deter criminal activity.
The programme is being financed from the Consolidated Fund and falls under the Ministry of National Security.
The Estimates will be considered by the Standing Finance Committee of the House beginning on March 1.
